自由,是人人都想要的。可是,单身意义上的自由呢?就不好说了。俚语“to be footloose and fancy-free”就是指“单身、自由,没有生活的羁绊”。

16世纪,“fancy”是“love (爱情)”的意思,那么,“fancy-free”当然就是“没有谈恋爱”。17世纪,“footloose”用来形容“自由、没有羁绊”的样子。这个词很形象,“foot+loose(脚松绑)”了,当然就可以随心所欲得到出走动了。到了19世纪,footloose和fancy-free自然而然走到了一起,表示“你完全自由了,不受地域、工作或家事的羁绊”。

看下面的例句:

When I was in my twenties, footloose and fancy-free, I would travel anywhere.
